A Life Of Service

I hope you are doing well. What is it that you or a friend could use help with?

We all can use a little help time to time: however you may want to ask some basic questions before you receive that help.

  1. Is the help you are asking for truly going to benefit you in the future? You may want to find out if you can do the task on your own before you ask for help.
  2. What are the motives behind the person helping your? We all want to help others or even be helped, but we must avoid co-dependant relationships.

Wether we are looking for help or we want to help someone, co-dependantcy is a real problem. Look at how people tend to get angry about how the Welfare system is keeping us down.

The Liberal tends to feel that those of us who are on Welfare is a justifiable expense. While those who get to pay more taxes because we who are on disability can’t or will not work, tend to resent paying for the up keep of freeloaders.

On the other hand, we who are the recipients of said assistance tend to want to resent being on in it, mostly because we know how others feel about it. I have a unique prospective because I have lived on both sides of the fence, regarding this issue. Now it has become my mission to help both sides understand where the other is coming from. Miracles on the Sabbath

Did you know that every miracle that is recorded that Jesus performed was on the Sabbath? We all know the stories but many overlook the fact that the act was always performed on the Sabbath and the Sanhedrin was always angry about it.

For those who have not figured it out, Jesus was a Radical and every chance he got to put the government in their rightful place was taken advantage of. You see the Jews had their “oral law” and this law was later put in written form and is called the Mishnah. The Jews had built a hedge around the Sabbath with their “oral law” in which they were trying not to break the Sabbath. The reason they did this was two fold. Years earlier they had disobeyed God by profaning God’s Sabbaths and worshiping idols and God had them carried away into the Babylonian captivity for seventy years (Ezekiel 20:23-24, Jeremiah 25:11.)

After the Babylonian captivity the Jews became very strict and did not do any idol worship from that time on. In order not to break the Sabbath the Jews created their “oral law” (Mishnah) and the largest tractate of the Seder Mo’ed deals with the Sabbath. Chapter seven has a list of thirty-nine chief kinds of work that are forbidden on the Sabbath. Some of these laws involve: sowing, plowing, reaping, baking and even extinguishing a fire. So you can see the they went a bit overboard.

When Jesus was old enough to know right from wrong he began to teach in the Temple, so the Jewish government understood that he knew the law, but just because a man makes a law does not mean that God the father agrees with it.

When Jesus was chastised for healing a crippled woman, he called the so-called authorities, ‘”Hypocrite!” Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it’ (Luke,13:16)?

The truth is, Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath and that makes the Sabbath the true “Lord’s Day.’ In performing these seven Sabbath miracles, Jesus is showing us how to keep the Sabbath. He emphasized the humane element of mercy, compassion and loving-kindness by healing and “doing good” on the Sabbath. He showed us that we are not to be “hard hearted” as the Pharisees were when it comes to the Sabbath. We need to keep the Sabbath as Jesus did by worshiping God and “doing good!”

We must remember that Jesus reminds us that the “the Sabbath was created for Man, Man was not created for the Sabbath” (Mark, 2:27). If we all kept the charitable nature of Christ all week and showed the love of Christ to our neighbours, there would be no need for government assistance.

A Hand Up Means You Give Back

Today we went to a food bank in a nieghboring town. This Helping Hands Network was started by Elizabeth Killeta, after her husband died over 20 years ago.

The organization is unique in that they ask for donations from the same people who are receiving help. I am sure you have heard the old saying, “charity bigins at home.”

The fact is that is someone has become so needy that he or she is not even willing to donate $5.00 for the program that keeps food on the table for them, that person we’ll have an even harder time making the life changes that are needed to make a better life for ones self.

Let me give you an example of two individuals who have adopted a mindset of entitlement. Both of them had been in automobile accidents in their youth. Both of them find ways to make other people do what they feel they don’t have to do. At different times in their lives the two women both used a wheelchair to gain simpathy from others. Don’t get me wrong I use a blind cane to help me get around and I know that driver’s tend to be more careful  when they see the cane. But this is different.

Both of these women tend to prey on the simpathy of others to get through life. I work a full time job and don’t ask for anything more than what the need of the ministry may be. The $5.00 donation that the Helping Hands Network asks for helps but food for the community that makes the donations. The group hand to reformat the in 2009 due to a lack of funding. By asking for donations from those who receive the help the Colton food AKA the Helping Hands Network has been able to stay afloat.

In many ways the Donations represent tything and a respect for the community that has worked so hard to stay afloat in the hardest of times.

The sick irony is found in the fact that the liberals who cut founding for programs like this due to the Christian roots of the program are also the largest demographic of recipients. By almost 90%.
